Harambee is a word in the Swahili language meaning 'to work to together for progress towards a common goal.' Our goal is build a new school, one classroom at a time, for the community of Kambi.
"The role of the Kenyan government is only to provide teachers and
instructional material. Communities are to make sure classrooms are
available. Even with the best will in the world, however a great many
communities find it hard to rise to the challenge of supplying school
facilities. Government statistics reveal a grim picture of poverty in
Kenya. With over half the population living below the poverty line of
a dollar a day, most families have few resources to spare for any activities
beyond those that meet their basic needs. "-Anthony Kagwa,
Public Relations Officer for the Kenya Ministry of Education

The Kambi Primary School Renovation Project was first inspired by Wilderness
Inquiry participants who experienced first hand the needs and aspirations
of Kambi during a personal visit in September of 2006. Kambi serves
around 320 students in facilities that are far from adequate. Today the Kambi project is run entirely by volunteers who donate their time and 100% of all money raised goes directly towards construction of classrooms.
